Welcome to Part 5 of our Shipping Container Frequently Asked Questions series, updated for 2025. As always, we’re here to make your container buying and delivery process easier by answering some of the most common questions we receive from customers. Whether you’re a first-time buyer or planning another delivery, this guide will help you prepare your site and understand what to expect when your container arrives.

21. Do I Need to Do Any Site Preparation Before Receiving the Shipping Container?

Most container suppliers, including YES Containers, do not include site preparation in the delivery price — but that’s good news for you because it’s something you can easily handle yourself. Proper site preparation ensures your container sits level, which is essential for smooth door operation and long-term stability.

You’ll need to:

  • Make sure the ground is flat and leveled.
  • Lay a base of gravel, asphalt, or wooden beams to keep the container off direct soil contact.
  • Clear debris, trim tree limbs, and remove obstacles above or near the delivery area.

For a complete step-by-step guide, visit our detailed post: Ground Preparation for Shipping Containers.

22. What Delivery Space Is Required for a Shipping Container?

The amount of space required for unloading depends on the container size and the truck type. Here’s a quick overview:

  • 40ft containers: Require approximately 100–120 ft of straight clearance.
  • 20ft containers: Need around 80–100 ft (60–80 ft if a short trailer is used).
  • Width clearance: Minimum 10–12 ft for tight spaces or gates.
  • Height clearance: At least 11–12 ft flat, or 14–16 ft when tilting the bed for roll-off delivery.

Before scheduling delivery, ensure there are no power lines, tree branches, or overhead obstructions that could interfere with unloading. You can also check the demonstration video on our homepage showing the ExpressShip delivery process.

23. What Type of Vehicle Delivers the Shipping Containers?

Most modern deliveries use a gooseneck tilt-bed trailer — a smaller, more maneuverable truck designed to roll containers off smoothly into place. This process is known as a Roll-Off Delivery.

Alternatively, containers can be delivered via flatbed trucks, but these require unloading equipment on-site, such as a forklift or crane. Without that, a flatbed delivery might require a “drag off” — a riskier unloading method not recommended for most customers.

Our drivers specialize in precise placement, even in challenging conditions. For more on this topic, see our related post: Understanding the Shipping Container Delivery Process.

24. Can Shipping Containers Be Delivered on Weekends or Holidays?

Weekend and holiday deliveries depend on carrier schedules and depot availability. Since most depots are closed on weekends, YES Containers can typically arrange Saturday deliveries only if containers are preloaded during the week. Additional fees may apply for special scheduling.

We recommend booking your delivery several days in advance, especially during busy seasons or weather delays. Our ExpressShip service often allows delivery within 5–7 business days for most U.S. regions.

25. Can Containers Be Delivered in Rain, Snow, or Off-Road Conditions?

Weather plays a major role in container delivery. Our trucks are 4WD-capable, but trailers are not, which means ground conditions matter. If the soil is too soft, the trailer could sink during unloading.

Here’s how to prepare for weather-affected deliveries:

  • Ensure firm, dry, or frozen ground during winter deliveries.
  • For off-road deliveries, confirm the route is solid enough to handle the truck’s weight.
  • Avoid delivery during heavy rainfall or immediately after storms.

In snowy or muddy conditions, our drivers may need extra time or rescheduling options for safety reasons. For advice on site safety and preparation, see Container Maintenance Guide.
